In order to qualify as a court reporter it is also necessary to have completed certain academic programs which for long meant becoming adept at using stenotype machines. This in turn means that you should know phonetic combinations of different keystrokes that are representative of certain sounds and which are not so much about spelling the words themselves.  You can learn all this from online court reporting schools if you do not want to attend a campus.

These machines generally do not have the typical keyboard as we know it and in fact the keyboard on the stenotype has a few keys and it is also possible to press different keys simultaneously.

Today, however, there is less need to print out reports and so the modern stenotype is now being connected to computers. This step helps in obviating the need for the court reporter to do translations of his stenotype because that can now be done by the computer without any delays.
