Fear of Failing the Exam
We all have fears that we face, one of these can be fear of failing an Exam. This can lead to over studying, being nervous and forgetting everything for the test, or not studying because you think it is a waste of time. However, there are several things you can do to quell your fears and help you to pass with flying colors.
If you are one to over study, you may want to slow down and take a breather. Taking in too much information at one time will make it difficult to absorb. If you have a few days before the test, the best thing to do is not to stress, look over each part of the test, and study it in sections, that way you can learn each piece of the test and memorize everything you need to, without stressing, straining, or taking in too much at once.
Nerves can be a problem, but if you make sure that you know the material and know the material ahead of time, so you don’t have to cram for the exam, and get a good night of sleep, things will look better in the morning. You must give your mind time to absorb the material, and you will do much better. If you cram before and do not sleep or get enough sleep, you will not absorb nearly as much. Rest will help you to do your best on the test and should help get rid of nerves, helping you to feel more confident.
If you feel inclined to put off studying because you feel it is hopeless, overwhelming, or too much to learn, don’t. Figure out what you will be quizzed on, make a study guide and work through some of it each day, or if you only have a day or two, study for an hour, take a fifteen minute break so you don’t feel overwhelmed, then you should be able get back to it. A small break will allow you to digest what you have learned, and let you focus better on the rest of the material when you go back to it again.
Fear of failing the exam can be controlled by a little positive thinking. Instead of thinking you will fail, or like the material is overwhelming, break it down and as you learn think, I will pass this test and I will do well. By keeping this frame of mind, you will be able to do better, focus more, and will be more apt to want to study and use the material to your advantage, rather than fear it or fear that you won’t pass.
If you are feeling anxiety toward the situation after trying studying on your own, talk to a classmate. Perhaps you can work together to make sure you both understand all the material, and studying won’t be as boring if you have someone to talk to as you study. You will also have someone to quiz you, which will give you the confidence to know that you can pass the test and that you do indeed know the material you are studying, so you don’t have to worry about failing the exam.
Fear of failure of any kind is scary, especially when your grades could be in trouble because of it. Don’t let it get your down, scare you off from studying, or make you study to fast or too hard, which won’t help you learn or ace the test. Instead think positive thoughts, work hard but take breaks, break down the material, and quiz yourself or work with a friend so that you can be sure that you know the material. Get a good night’s sleep so that you can be rested and confident for the exam.
