After Count Cenci is murdered, Orsino muses over his feelings of guilt. “Shall I be a slave/ Of… what? A word?” he demands. This word I would imagine is “murderer.” Orsino’s enslavement, he understands, is not external. Rather it is his own conscience. His “enslavement” is inescapable, and his fleeing of Rome is therefor pointless. He does not “have the power to fly [his] own reproaches.” The men of the world employ the word murderer not at themselves, but at each other “as men wear daggers not for self-offense.” But, he implies, they are as he is also guilty of this murder. Their complacency in the face of such appalling injustice necessitated drastic action. Thus they are in part also responsible. Orsino’s guilt stems from the power of the word “murderer” which will hang over him forever. A prelate, it is sufficient for guilt that he and God have knowledge of his action.

Beatrice is also caught by a word; “death” – since she will soon be killed for the murder of her father, Count Cenci. What do “death” and “murderer” have in common? The Cenci is a complex and morally ambiguous play. It tear’s at extreme’s which almost justify the unforgivable. It leaves Beatrice little hope, and little choice. Justice tends to become irrelevant when confronted with moral survival. From the maelstrom of this complexity comes an act – the murder of Count Cenci. All of a sudden a halcyon atmosphere pervades the play. An unalterable resolution has occurred. During the rest of the play moral arguments are given and people are arrested, but nevertheless the conflict and tension have been resolved (though perhaps not the consequences of the resolution). All that is left of former confusion are insoluble residue. Beatrice will die. Orsino is a murderer. It is these potent insoluble residues that “enslave” Orsino and Beatrice. Everything else has become irrelevant. Both lives are dominated by these words, though each has a different dynamo. Orsino is caught by inner guilt caused by implicit religious undertones and societal internalization. Beatrice is caught by external forces of the law and societal expediency. Confusion and complexity drop away in the face of the terrible action, and the remaining dross contains all the power. These words, “murderer” and “death,” have power because they represent the inescapable future and link back to the unchangeable past. Orsino cannot escape his crime, nor his guilt, and Beatrice cannot escape her death. How different these concrete and enslaving words are to the intricacy of the middle of the play where Beatrice struggles to find a word which does not exist.

Freedom of political speech, as a basic liberty, is of great importance for Rawls since it allows for the full use of one’s capability for a sense of justice, to the stability and health of a free democracy, and to one’s full identity as a citizen.  Similarly, the fair value of one’s political liberties, that one’s political liberties are not merely formal, is essential in order to allow all members of a society to act as meaningful citizens, and to enact just legislation that will be representative of the society and do its part to maintain its vigor.  Sometimes liberties must limit one another in order to maintain their meaning and fair value.  Freedom of political speech and the fair value of political liberties may limit one another. What might one do if confronted with the need to violate freedom of political speech in order to maintain the fair value of political liberties?  Is limiting the role of money in political procedure in order to guarantee the fair value of political liberties an infringement on the freedom of political speech?  Government limits on contributions and expenditures in political campaigns may or may not be an example of such a violation depending on the reasons for respecting each side.

Free political speech is a fundamental part of your identity as a citizen.  It is a basic liberty that is “essential to secure the free, full, and informed exercise of [the capacity for a sense of justice] (PL 342).”  Free speech also serves as both an outlet for complaint within a society and an instrument for change.  In a reasonable and well governed democracy, free speech is a crucial part of this process.  Without free speech there would be a greater risk of eruptions of violence and discontent.  “free speech together with the just political procedure specified by the constitution provides an alternative to revolution and the use of force which can be so destructive to the basic liberties (PL 344).”  Free speech prevents such outbursts not only be providing the system with an awareness of its problems and inadequacies but by allowing for organization and change to arise due to the exercise of free speech.  Such movements, especially in a democracy, are a result of the fully functioning use of free political speech, and can result in positive and dynamic change.  The importance of free speech in a democracy is humorously presented in the old adage “democracy relies on the use of three boxes:  soap, ballet, and ammo – to be used in that order.”

Vermont is famous for its delicious maple syrup, but this state in the United States is not the only place where this product is harvested and produced. When we were in college, there was a professor who was determined to have us work extra hard for marks. Every semester, he would come up with new assignments that he had taught nothing about.
